Women in Love was published as a sequel to Lawrence’s controversial The Rainbow, although they were meant to be one book. Because The Rainbow was banned in the UK for eleven years, the novel was initially published in the U.S. to subscribers only, after years of delays. Lawrence’s UK publisher backed out out of publishing the novel, and UK readers had to wait for over a year until it was finally published in England.
